Lip Piercing Types

Lip piercing penetrates the lip or the area surrounding lips. This type of piercing is very common in some parts of the world especially in Africa. Also, lip piercing has a religious significance in some cultures such as The Nuba tribe of Ethiopia and Dogon tribe of Mali. For example, these types of cultures use the piercing as a symbol of religious hierarchy.

Nowadays, on the contrary of past usage, lip piercing represent an individual style. If we consider that it is the least painful practice among piercing types, being common is not a surprise for lip piercing. When we look at the body area of practice, we can call it either facial or oral type of piercing.

There are twelve most common types of lip piercings. First one is labret piercing which is not exactly attached to the lip. It is generally done under the lip and above the chin. Another common type is Monroe piercing because people inspired Marilyn Monroe’s birthmark and wanted to resemble her. Thus, they used piercing for this purpose. This piercing is usually on the side of upper lip. Specifically, it is also not attached on the lip; it should be above the lip. If you use double version of it in both left and right side of the lip, it became an “angel bite”. The other well-known piercing model related with a celebrity is Madonna. The only difference between Madonna and Monroe piercings is the location. While Monroe takes place on the left side of the lip, Madonna locates on the right side.

Medusa piercing is done on the philtrum area where just below the nose so it calls either philtrum piercing officially. However, there is a crucial think about it because if its location is not calculated, it will alter the face symmetry. Another version of Medusa piercing is jestrum. It is very similar with vertical labret but jestrum upper to top lip. When we look at the vertical labret piercing, you should put lower bead to same place where a normal labret piercing would be. One of the most specific types of piercing is bites piercing and it contains several subcategories like snake bites and spider bites. If you examine them by one by, the only difference between them is again location of jewelry. For instance, the snake bite contains two set of piercings they are placed on the left and right side of the lip. This should be under the lower lip. If you want to do same thing to your upper lip, then it will become angel bites piercing. Also, there is another usual form of piercing: Dahlia bites. Here, there are two piercings at the corners of mouth. Basically we can call it as another form of labret piercing.
